As a Technical Officer, you will:

  • Provide technical support in the preparation of materials for Optometry teaching classes and assessments to guarantee the smooth running of these events, ensuring that the laboratories and materials are cleaned afterwards, and safety standards are maintained.
  • Provide technical expertise in the use and maintenance of a range of general equipment and specialised instrumentation relating to Optometry and assist research staff and students in the operations of these instruments/equipment for practical classes or research as required.
  • Source and obtain quotes for pricing and availability, and process orders and invoices for laboratory consumables, reagents, chemicals and equipment for teaching and research activities, including specialist optometric suppliers and coordination of maintenance and repairs of specialist equipment.
  • Maintain local infrastructure, and adequate stocks of consumables, reagents, and equipment for use in teaching and research programs.
  • Provide operational support to the Deakin Collaborative Eye Care Clinic (DCECC) by ordering and maintaining consumables, equipment and processing invoices and deliveries.
  • Ensure the implementation of all University policies that relate to the areas for which the position is responsible, in particular, those relating to equal opportunity, occupational health and safety, risk management, staff development and staff performance planning and review.
  • This position requires occasional travel to off‑campus sites in Melbourne and Lorne, as well as flexibility with start and finish times to accommodate late‑ending classes.                                                                                                                                       

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Completion of a Degree without subsequent relevant work experience; or
  • Completion of an Associate Diploma and at least two years subsequent relevant work experience; or
  • Completion of a Post-Trades Certificate or Advanced Certificate and extensive relevant experience as a Technician; or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting, ideally within a tertiary education environment.
  • Good knowledge of OH&S (Occupational Health and Safety) principles and an understanding of the requirements for safety when working with biological and chemical hazards.
