About the role:
The Coordinator, Drone Operations provides advice and leads the coordination of operational activities and Remote Pilot (RP) training to ensure the safe, compliant, and effective use of remotely piloted aircraft at Deakin University, including excluded category operations. The Coordinator, Drone Operations fulfils the Chief Pilot and Maintenance Controller roles under the University’s Remotely Operated Certificate (ReOC).
As a Drone Operations Coordinator, you will:
- Coordinate remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) operational activities across the University, ensuring alignment with legislative, regulatory, safety and institutional requirements.
- Plan and oversee the maintenance of RPA Systems, including aircraft, payloads and ancillary equipment, in accordance with manufacturer specifications, Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) requirements and the ReOC.
- Analyse operational risks, incident reports, audit findings, flight activity data and compliance metrics to inform decision‑making, continuous improvement initiatives and risk mitigation strategies for drone operations.
- Deliver effective and efficient RP training, assessment, authorisation and currency management processes to ensure pilots remain competent, appropriately licensed and compliant with CASA and University requirements.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- Postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and management expertise; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Training and/or experience working in aviation, manned or unmanned aircraft.
- Remote Pilot’s licence (RePL) for fixed-wing (7kg) and multi-rotor (25kg) with a minimum 100 RPA flight hours.
- Extensive experience with remotely piloted aircraft, occupational health and safety and CASA documentation.
