About the role:
As the Coordinator, Recreation Facilities you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality health, fitness, and recreation services across Deakin University's sports facilities and gyms. You will oversee the day-to-day operation of fitness centres and sports facilities and the coordination and administration of group fitness programs, ensuring a seamless and engaging experience for members, students, and the broader university community.
Working closely with fitness instructors, personal trainers, facility staff, and the wider Campus Experience team, you are responsible for scheduling classes, maintaining program quality, and ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards. As the Coordinator, you will be supervising part-time staff, supporting community engagement initiatives, and helping promote participation in health and wellness activities across campuses.
With a strong focus on service delivery, organisation, and team collaboration, you are instrumental in fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and active environment aligned with our mission to encourage wellbeing through movement and connection.
As a Coordinator, Recreation Facilities you will:
- Oversee daily operations of Deakin’s fitness centres and recreation facilities across all campuses, ensuring high-quality service delivery.
- Recruit, onboard, and support fitness centre staff, including coaching, rostering, and contributing to their professional development and wellbeing in line with Deakin University policies and frameworks.
- Support business and marketing planning by contributing to the development and implementation of the annual Business Plan.
- Manage facility scheduling and bookings, including external tenants and casual hirers, and respond to customer enquiries to ensure efficient and effective use of spaces.
- Monitor industry trends and member insights, including researching fitness and recreation innovations, conducting regular member surveys, and applying findings to enhance programs and customer experience.
- Engage with stakeholders, including students, staff, DUSA sport clubs, Deakin Residential Services, and community partners, to support university-wide programs, student placements, and engagement initiatives.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- A Degree in Exercise and Sports Science with substantial subsequent relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and management expertise in technical or administrative fields; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience working collaboratively and effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders and/or clients from business, government or community sectors and students
- Extensive experience in the fitness industry, including health club and/or fitness centre operations.
- Demonstrated proficiency in operating CRM and fitness-specific software.
- Demonstrated experience negotiating commercial stakeholder agreements and building constructive stakeholder relationships.
- Proven ability to manage complex operating budgets, including the capacity to forecast, report on, and reconcile financial outcomes.
- Experience working within an organisation with complex administrative structures, policies and procedures, preferably within the higher education sector
