About this role:

Deakin Law Clinic (the Clinic) is a community legal service offering free legal advice and assistance to people experiencing disadvantage in their access to justice, or whose matters are conducted in the public interest. The Clinic has two offices, Melbourne (based in Deakin University’s Docklands Corporate Centre, Deakin Downtown) and Geelong at Deakin University’s Waterfront Campus.  The vacant position is based at Deakin Downtown Corporate Centre.

The Clinical Solicitor is responsible for delivering an effective community legal service including the provision of high-quality advice, assistance, and casework service to a diverse client base, as well as supervising and instructing law students undertaking professional/clinical practice units.

We are seeking a generalist practitioner, ideally with experience in civil matters such as fines, family law, wills and estates and intervention order matters. 

As a Clinical Solicitor, you will:

  • Deliver an efficient and effective legal service to clients in accordance with legislation and legal directions, policy, guidelines, and practice standards
  • Contribute to the delivery of professional/clinical legal practice units to Deakin law students through the supervision and instruction of students enrolled in these units and working in the Deakin Law Clinic.
  • Maintain networks and close connections with community organisations, law reform agencies, and potential client sources and support services.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical-based curriculum and ensure its ongoing review and relevancy to legal practice.
  • Oversight the training, supervision, and support of clinical law students. This includes organising case reviews, supervising written work, and performing teaching, assessment, and administrative tasks for assigned clinical courses.                                                                                                                                       

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A current unrestricted Australian practising certificate, which entitles you to practise as a Solicitor or Barrister in Victoria
  • PQE 3+ Years of experience and a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor Degree with subsequent relevant work experience (as outlined above)
  • Demonstrated practical experience in legal practice and relevant court procedures with evidence of case management.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work as an advocate and caseworker in complex legal matters.
  • Demonstrate a desire to build external relationships with other legal services and providers to grow the reputation of Deakin Law Clinic as both a community legal service and a teaching law practice.
  • Demonstrated mentoring, training or teaching experience.
