Benefits for working with us!

At Deakin, we offer more than just a job - we offer a lifestyle. Across our campuses in Geelong, Melbourne, and regional Victoria, you’ll find everything you need to thrive: on-site childcare, gyms, medical centres, cafes, accessible public transport, and convenient parking. Enjoy flexible working arrangements that support your work-life balance, generous leave entitlements including extended parental leave and the option to purchase additional time off, plus a wide range of staff discounts on travel and more. Our health and wellbeing services, ongoing professional development opportunities, and inclusive, supportive culture make Deakin a place where you can grow - whether you're working remotely or immersed in the vibrant energy of campus life.

About the role

Research at Deakin is enabled by a diverse and distributed ecosystem spanning specialist platforms, enterprise capabilities, locally managed solutions, shared services and external partners.

Sitting within Digital's Systems & Solutions team, you'll be accountable for the day-to-day delivery, support, performance and lifecycle of a focused set of Research applications and services. Beyond these direct responsibilities, you’ll play a broader role in shaping how Digital supports Research, helping to improve the consistency, effectiveness and sustainability of digital capabilities and services across the University.

Partnering with our faculties, institutes and portfolios, a key focus will be building a clearer picture of the technology capabilities and services that enable Research. Through this process, governance and shared approaches will be strengthened, while ensuring specialised research needs are identified and supported appropriately.

The objective isn’t to centralise every capability within Digital. It’s to make the distributed ecosystem work more effectively by improving visibility, strengthening ownership and lifecycle accountability.

There isn't a fully defined roadmap waiting for you. You'll need the curiosity and initiative to understand the landscape, build trusted relationships and turn ambiguity into a practical direction for improvement.

While leading a small team, much of your impact will come through engagement, collaboration and influence across a much broader university community.

As the Senior Manager, Research Platforms, you will:

Lead the delivery and operation of Digital's Research platforms and services, ensuring they are effectively supported, maintained, secure, reliable and continuously improved.

Create greater visibility and cohesion across the Research technology ecosystem, its capabilities, services, dependencies and ownership.

Connect Research with Digital capability, identifying where shared services and established capabilities can better enable Research.

Strengthen governance and accountability, creating practical ownership and lifecycle models across a distributed environment.

Turn ambiguity into direction and action, establishing priorities and driving meaningful service and capability improvements.

Build stronger partnerships between Research and Digital, bringing different needs and perspectives together while influencing priorities, investment and decisions across the broader Research technology landscape.

About you

You’re an experienced Digital/IT services leader who combines sound judgement with a pragmatic and collaborative approach. Your leadership style enables you to develop teams, work effectively with senior stakeholders and specialists, and build credibility across different areas of an organisation.

Experience within higher education would be highly regarded. Direct Research technology leadership is valuable, but it isn’t the only path to this role. Equally important is a strong understanding of digital services, genuine interest in Research and the researcher experience, and the curiosity to learn and understand a specialised environment.

You’ll also bring relevant postgraduate qualifications and/or extensive relevant professional experience.

Help us understand why this opportunity is the right fit for you

Along with your CV, please include a brief, tailored cover letter telling us:

  • what draws you to the intersection of Research and Digital;
  • how your experience relates to the challenge we've described; and
  • what you would bring to creating greater clarity, cohesion and direction across the Research technology landscape.

We'd value a concise and considered explanation of why this particular opportunity resonates with you and what you believe you could contribute.
