The Senior Technical Officer proactively supports the development and delivery of practical and field-based teaching, research and associated administrative activities within the School to ensure programs are delivered efficiently and specialist expertise is available to academic staff and students. The role manages and supports teaching, learning and research facilities, including practical and field-based equipment, consumables and logistics, and maintains accurate and up-to-date written procedures.
The position provides expertise in instrumentation operation, equipment repair and use, and field-based and laboratory safety to research staff and students. While support is predominantly aligned with zoological science-based discipline units, the role will support other disciplines as required and liaise across School locations and with external organisations to coordinate support and source supplies. The position requires a high level of independent organisation, decision-making and problem-solving.
As a Senior Technical Officer, you will:
- Provide day-to-day management of laboratories and teaching spaces, including workflow organisation of practical class support.
- Manage the logistics and organisation of field-based activities supporting teaching, learning and research within Zoology programs.
- Proactively engage with teaching activities in collaboration with academic staff by providing specialist knowledge and training in the use of equipment, software, field-based activities and laboratory materials relevant to the discipline.
- Ensure laboratory and field equipment and vehicles are maintained and operated to a safe and high standard, including carrying out minor repairs and coordinating servicing with internal and external providers.
- Ensure appropriate levels of laboratory stocks, equipment and materials are available to support teaching and research activities, in accordance with relevant purchasing policies and processes.
- Expectation to drive bus for undergraduate field trips
To be successful, you’ll have:
- A Bachelor degree in Science with a major in Zoology with subsequent relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and specialist knowledge or broad knowledge in technical fields; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience working in a related field or discipline in higher education or a similar large complex environment.
- Sound knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety principles and an understanding of the requirements for safety when working in the field and with biological and chemical hazards.
- Preferable: Experience operating 4WD vehicles in field-based environments.
- Preferable: Animal handling experience relevant to zoological teaching, research or fieldwork.
- Preferable: Light or Medium Rigid licence
