About the role:

Deakin’s Research Business Development and Commercialisation (BD&C) division plays a key role in establishing partnerships with industry, government, and our community to drive research translation. The team leads strategic engagement, supports business development, and commercialises Deakin’s intellectual property and supporting entrepreneurs. BD&C key areas include Deakin’s Recycling and Clean Energy Commercialisation Hub (REACH) Trailblazer, Business Development, Intellectual Property, Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship.

As a Manager, Intellectual Property, you will:

  • Build long-term partnerships with Deakin researcher community, act as a trusted advisor, and provide expert, strategic solutions aligned with Deakin’s strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to manage intellectual property and conduct large-scale IP audits.
  • Provide expert, sustainable solutions to manage Deakin’s patenting process and patent portfolio, enhancing IP protection, research impact, and alignment with Deakin’s strategy.
  • Represent the university in negotiations relating to University IP, and effectively liaise on complex commercial contracts and research agreements.
  • Demonstrate resilience and high performance under pressure, turning challenges into opportunities, coaching others through change, and proactively driving work to achieve goals.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or
  • Extensive experience and management expertise; or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Demonstrated capacity to build relationships and represent with internal and external partners and customers across industry, government and university sectors
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to achieve quality customer service for clients
  • Understanding of research and technology concepts and ability to achieve commercial outcomes
  • Ability to negotiate and manage contractual arrangements and coordinate projects
