This dynamic role enables you to showcase Deakin’s world-leading research and teaching outcomes, along with our rich and progressive contributions to society as the 2020s get underway.
You’ll establish and nurture relationships with national, state and local media but most importantly you’ll be part of a truly collaborative team that regularly partners with Deakin’s great thinkers, innovators and doers who have newsworthy stories to tell. The role allows you to lead people and projects as required, in-line with our focus to continuously improve the quality of our proactive and reactive media coverage by planning, coordinating, creating, and delivering engaging media stories and positive outcomes. This really is a rare opportunity to combine your strategic mindset, collaborative style and superior writing skills with a deep understanding of the Victorian and national media. This is a challenging and fast-paced role that will be immensely satisfying for a high-performer who wants to maximise the impact of Deakin’s current and emerging media channels, and progress their skills and career along the way.
Based at our Burwood campus, this exciting role sits within the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and is permanent, ongoing.
Aside from opportunities to apply a diverse range of high-level, strategic and media skills; your seniority means you’re seen as an expert who ‘gets’ the news cycle and knows how a good story – and a sensitive one – should be handled. You’ll work with senior staff to create smart media schedules that help us gain regular media coverage and maintain our global thought-leading reputation across many fields, and work closely with academic experts to ensure they interview successfully across print, broadcast and digital. You’ll be responsible for writing engaging media releases, responses and other content that gets placed across national and Victorian news networks. Other attractive responsibilities include co-leading the delivery of media training workshops across Deakin; and coordinating workflow and resources across the team to keep us aligned with our faculty friends.
To be successful, you’ll have solid experience in a media relations/journalism role with responsibility for both proactive and reactive messaging, tactics and strategies. You’ll be able to demonstrate leadership and emotional intelligence capabilities to work collaboratively and strategically in a team that shares workloads, and with academic and non-academic people at all levels of an organisation with different perspectives.
