The role

To sessionally tutor in 2020 in one or more of the following units in the undergraduate Creative Writing Bachelor and major sequence:

Trimester 1

ALW101 Writer's Toolkit: Craft and Creativity

ALW225 Designing Fictions

ALW227 Scriptwriting: Character, Event, Consequence

ALW223 Creative Nonfiction: Inquiry, Integrity, Vulnerability

ALW396 Producing Digital Anthologies: From Concept to Publication

ALW395 Experimental Writing Lab

Trimester 2

ALW102 Writing Spaces: Paradigms and Provocations

ALW242 Poetry: Events in Language

ALW205 The Role of the Editor

ALW252 Writing for Young People

ALW251 Writing for Games: Designing Quests and Characters

ALW394 Studio Writing Project

Trimester 3

ALW101 Writer's Toolkit: Craft and Creativity

ALW225 Designing Fictions

To be successful, you’ll have:

1. Appropriate degree or experience relevant to the unit.

2. Understanding of relevant unit subject content as demonstrated by academic achievement and/or professional competency. 

3. Excellent teaching skills and experience teaching the subject-matter, or capacity to develop teaching skills within the context of the unit.

4. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others. 

5. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively with students and unit chair and commitment to providing timely and constructive feedback on student assignments.


  1. Please nominate up to three units per trimester at undergraduate or postgraduate level (in Professional and Creative Writing, Literary Studies, Children’s Literature or Gender and Sexuality Studies). Please note that you may be considered for units you have not nominated. By applying here you are applying as a sessional tutor within the Group “Writing & Literature” at Deakin.
  2. Please nomimate your campus/campuses of availability (Burwood, Waurn Ponds, online)
  3. Upload a current CV (if you are not already on the tutoring register*).
  4. Please note all successful applicants will need to have a current Working with Children Check at their own expense.
  5. When you save your application, please save with file name: SURNAME_BCW_xxx_xxx_xxx [these being the numbers of the units in the list above that you’d like to teach in. EG: Jones_BCW_101_225_395].

*the “tutoring register” will contain the applications of successful, but not necessarily immediately employed in trimester of application, applicants. Once you are on this register, if you wish to be considered for subsquent trimesters, you will not need to repeat the longer initial process (such as providing a CV), but only a simpler application pathway.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

As a Sessional Tutor you will make an important contribution to the discipline(s) and unit(s) for which you are engaged. You will prepare and conduct tutorials, consult with students, undertake assessment and attend meetings as required by the Unit Chair.
